My Biography

First licensed in 1995, I became involved after my then neighbor (in the suburbs of New Haven County, CT) N1QQV (silent key) brought me into the world of Amateur Radio.

Licensed as a “no code” technician, I was involved in packet radio on VHF and local repeater use.  I was not involved at all for years, until around 2021, I unpacked some of the gear I had back then and discovered so much activity in the area locally (here in Essex County).  I quickly learned CW was no longer on exams, passed my General Class license exam, and got on HF.

What was lost on me at the time (back in the 90s) was that the technician class was just a window into what’s possible and that the real fun starts on HF.   I am currently interested in packet on HF (and VHF), occasionally hunting for POTA activators, local QSOs, HF, all technical aspects of the hobby.  If I am not on the air having a technical chat or ragchew, I am building a kit, restoring equipment, or improving something in the shack.

I post my experiences and projects on my blog, n1ugk.com and enjoy helping others who have questions or problems to solve.
