In Memory of Bill Leger, WA2WL
The West Essex Amateur Radio Club is saddened to learn of the recent passing of our friend and former member, Bill Leger, WA2WL.
Bill was one of the first club members I had the pleasure of meeting in person at a meeting in 2023. From that moment, his kindness, welcoming nature, and genuine warmth stood out. He had a way of making newcomers feel instantly at ease, and his enthusiasm for the hobby was contagious.
A passionate Parks on the Air (POTA) enthusiast, Bill was a frequent activator, always eager to share his knowledge and experiences in portable operating. He had a gift for teaching—whether it was explaining the finer points of setting up in the field or offering tips to help others enjoy the unique challenges and rewards of operating away from home.
Bill’s generosity extended beyond his own operating. As a Volunteer Examiner, he helped many people earn their amateur radio licenses, opening the door for them to join the community he loved so much. He often invited others to join him in portable operations, sharing not just equipment and expertise, but also the camaraderie that makes amateur radio special.
Although our schedules never aligned for a joint activation, I will always be grateful for his open invitation, his willingness to share his time, and his friendly presence at club gatherings.
Bill’s call sign, WA2WL, will be missed on the airwaves, but his contributions to our club, to POTA, and to amateur radio will be long remembered.
Bill WA2WL
